Economic Events on March 7, 2012

The Mortgage Bankers’ Association purchase index will be released at 7:00 AM Eastern time, providing an update on the quantity of new mortgages and refinancings closed in the last week.

The Challenger Job-Cut Report will be released at 7:30 AM Eastern time, providing an estimate of the number of layoffs in February.

At 8:15 AM Eastern time, the monthly ADP Employment Report will be released.  Investors will be watching this number to get advance notice on the state of the job market in advance of the government’s report on Friday.

At 8:30 AM Eastern time, the Productivity and Costs report for the fourth quarter of 2011 will be released.  The consensus is that non-farm productivity increased by 0.9% in the last quarter and labor unit costs increased 1.2%.

At 10:30 AM Eastern time, the weekly Energy Information Administration Petroleum Status Report will be released, giving investors an update on oil inventories in the United States.

At 3:00 PM Eastern time, the Consumer Credit report for January will be released.  The consensus estimate is that there will be an increase of $10.0 billion in the consumer credit available, after an increase of $19.3 billion in the previous month.

Economic Events on February 29, 2012

The Mortgage Bankers’ Association purchase index will be released at 7:00 AM Eastern time, providing an update on the quantity of new mortgages and refinancings closed in the last week.

At 8:30 AM Eastern time, the preliminary GDP report for the fourth quarter of 2011 will be announced.  The consensus is an increase of 2.8% in real GDP and an increase of 0.4% in the GDP price index.  The real GDP estimate is the same as the advance value for the fourth quarter of 2011, and the GDP price index is the same.

At 9:45 AM Eastern time, the Chicago PMI Index for February will be announced. The consensus index value is 61.0, which is 0.8 points higher than last month, and is still above the break-even level at 50.

At 9:30 AM Eastern time, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will give his semiannual report to the House Financial Services Committee.

At 10:30 AM Eastern time, the weekly Energy Information Administration Petroleum Status Report will be released, giving investors an update on oil inventories in the United States.

At 2:00 PM Eastern time, the Beige Book report will be released, giving us more information about economic conditions in each Federal Reserve district in advance of the next Fed meeting.

At 3:00 PM Eastern time, the Farm Prices report for February will be released, giving investors and economists an indication of the direction of food prices in the coming months.

At 8:30 AM Eastern time, the U.S. government will release its weekly Jobless Claims report. The consensus is that there were 355,000 new jobless claims last week, which would would be 7,000 more than the previous week.

At 9:45 AM Eastern time, the weekly Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index will be released, providing an update on Americans’ views of the U.S. economy, their personal finances and the buying climate.

At 10:00 AM Eastern time, the FHFA House Price Index for December will be released, providing more information about the direction of the housing market.

At 11:00 AM Eastern time, the Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Index for February will be released.  The consensus is that the index will be at 9, which would be an increase of 2 points from the previous month.

At 10:30 AM Eastern time, the weekly Energy Information Administration Natural Gas Report will be released, giving an update on natural gas inventories in the United States.

At 11:00 AM Eastern time, the weekly Energy Information Administration Petroleum Status Report will be released, giving investors an update on oil inventories in the United States.

At 4:30 PM Eastern time, the Federal Reserve will release its Money Supply report, showing the amount of liquidity available in the U.S. economy.

Also at 4:30 PM Eastern time, the Federal Reserve will release its Balance Sheet report, showing the amount of liquidity the Fed has injected into the economy by adding or removing reserves.

At 8:30 AM Eastern Time, the Empire State manufacturing index for February will be released. The consensus is that the index value will be 14.75, which would be 1.27 points higher than the value reported in the previous month.

At 9:00 AM Eastern time, the Treasury International Capital report for December will be released, showing the flow of capital in and out of the United States economy.

At 9:15 AM Eastern time, the Industrial Production report for January will be released. The consensus is that there will be an increase 0f 0.7% in production and an increase 0f 0.5% in industrial capacity utilization.

At 10:00 AM Eastern time, the Housing Market Index for February will be announced.  This index is created from a survey of home builders, so it shows the confidence that the sector has in the overall economy and their business.

At 10:30 AM Eastern time, the weekly Energy Information Administration Petroleum Status Report will be released, giving investors an update on oil inventories in the United States.

At 2:00 PM Eastern time, the FOMC Meeting Minutes will be released, which will provide insight into how the Federal Reserve board governors and bank presidents view the economy.

Also at 10:00 AM Eastern time, the pending home sales index for November will be announced.  The consensus is that the index decreased 1.0% last month.

At 10:30 AM Eastern time, the weekly Energy Information Administration Petroleum Status Report will be released, giving investors an update on oil inventories in the United States.

At 2:15 PM Eastern time, the FOMC Meeting Announcement will be made, which will provide insight into how long the Federal Reserve plans to keep their rates target at 0% to 0.25%.  It is assumed that there will be no immediate change in the Fed funds target rate, but any hint that rates could rise in the future could have an impact on the bond market and stock market.

At 8:30 AM Eastern time, the U.S. government will release its weekly Jobless Claims report. The consensus is that there were 383,000 new jobless claims last week, which would would be 16,000 less than the previous week.

Also at 8:30 AM Eastern time, the Housing Starts report for December will be released.  The consensus is that construction on 678,000 new homes were started last month, which would be a decrease of 7,000 from November.

Also at 8:30 AM Eastern time, the Consumer Price Index report for December will be released.  The consensus is that CPI increased 0.1% last month, and there was a 0.1% increase in CPI when food and energy are removed.
