auction houses, will hold a monumental single-owner sale on September 19th and 20th. The auction of over 1,700 lots is estimated to fetch $7-$10 million and the firm anticipates that wine collectors around the world will clamor to own a piece of this historic cellar.

The Fox Cellar is poised to electrify the wine collecting world with its encyclopedic offering of full-case lots, most purchased by the current owner as futures or on release and still nestled in their original wooden cases. All wines have been removed from temperature and humidity controlled storage.

The sale will feature unparalleled quantities of the worlds most sought after wines. Foremost among the group are 166 lots of Château Lafite-Rothschild worth an estimated $1,067,400- $1,589,900 including 7 cases of the 1982 and 21 cases of the 1996 vintages (all in their original wooden cases). Also staggering is a 100 lot offering of Château Pétrus worth an estimated $1-$1.5 million; more than 1,000 bottles from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and well over a thousand bottles each of Châteaux Latour, Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild and Haut-Brion. Other featured offerings include large selections of Italian wines from Angelo Gaja along with Super Tuscans, Guigal’s Single-Vineyard Côte Rôties, and top California producers.

Exceptional Provenance

Most of the wines in the Fox Cellar were purchased as futures or on release. Hart Davis Hart has receipts for many of the wines in the Fox Cellar and will be publishing examples in the auction catalog. Below is an example of one of the receipts.

A receipt from Fox for 5 cases of 1996 Lafite-Rothschild purchased on release. A single case of Lafite is today valued at $8,000-$12,000, an over 400% increase in value since release.

Hart Davis Hart closed the first half of their 2008 schedule with another wildly successful auction on June 28th, bringing $3,315,086 against a pre-sale auction estimate of $2,030,040-3,025,510. In the first half of 2008, Hart Davis Hart sold $15,353,188 over four auctions with a combined pre-sale estimate of $9,239,750-13,797,909. Three of the four auctions were 100% sold, with the fourth sale at 99.33% by lot. With a mere 7 lots passing since September of 2007, the firm’s sell-through rates were the highest in the industry, an important indicator of Hart Davis Hart’s ability to reach the global audience of top wine buyers.

Château Lafite-Rothschild Dinner at Charlie Trotter’s

On Thursday, September 18th Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. will host a 20 vintage Château Lafite-Rothschild wine dinner at Chicago’s famous Charlie Trotter’s. For centuries, the mention of Château Lafite-Rothschild has conjured evocative images of grandeur and decadence, having been so favored in the Court of Versailles that it was widely hailed as “the King’s Wine.” To launch the remarkable auction weekend, Hart Davis Hart has chosen 20 celebrated vintages reflective of the Fox Cellar, spanning the past four decades of the estate, including such luminary vintages as 1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, and 2003.
